Windjammer Sports and Powerman sign contract for Powerman Duathlon Fuerteventura

2012 Powerman World Series - a new Powerman duathlon race

Windjammer Sports are proud to announce an agreement with the International Powerman Association (IPA) to create and present a new Powerman duathlon race as part of the prestigious 2012 Powerman World Series. The race will be held on Saturday 5th May on the Spanish island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.

The Powerman series grew from the original Powerman Duathlon that was created in Zofingen, Switzerland. Today, it forms the World Championships of Long Distance Duathlon and is still the most brutal test of a duathlete’s strength and endurance. The legendary triathlete, Mark Allen, a winner of the Hawaii Ironman an incredible six times, said that Powerman Zofingen was the hardest race he had ever participated in.

The Windjammer Powerman Duathlon – Fuerteventura will serve as an official qualifying event for the Long Distance World Championships, as well as serving as the Spanish Duathlon National Championships and the Canary Islands Duathlon Championships. As such, Windjammer Sports have created a route that will live up to all the expectations created by the Powerman brand, with a exceptionally challenging and exciting route that will be a true and honest test of the participants’ courage and endurance.

The main event has a run-bike-run distance of 12km-75km-13km. To create a very special Powerman Race Day Experience, Windjammer Sports also have a short course version, called theWindjammer SPRINT 30 Duathlon, held over parts of the main course but with a run-bike-run distance of 4km-21km-4km. Also available is a race for the runners only. The Windrunners 14K will be raced over the menacing final leg of the main event - out-and-back to the Faro de la Entallada lighthouse, perched on a cliff-top 200m above sea-level.

The event is hosted by Playitas Resort - for which Windjammer Sports are Official Cycle Partners - a four-star sports and activity family resort, nestling on the Atlantic coast of this sun-drenched, laid-back island.

General Manager of Playitas, Stephan Meyvisch: “I look forward to welcoming all the competitors, and their families, to Playitas. We set high standards here, and working with Windjammer Sports and the IPA shows our commitment to attracting top quality events to Playitas and to Fuerteventura.”

President of the IPA, John Raadschelders said: “I am delighted to have Windjammer Sports as a partner of Powerman, and after my recent visit to Playitas to view the route and the facilities, I am very confident that this race will be a true epic".

Windjammer Sports is a new premium sports and events company specializing in the creation of challenging endurance events in cycling, running and duathlon.

Race Director, Mark Davies: “With a 5 time Age Group World Champion involved in the company it only took a few days after we set up in Fuerteventura to realize what an incredible duathlon we could have here. We know about this sport. We’re thrilled to be working with the IPA because Powerman is THE name in duathlon. People have certain expectations of a Powerman event and we intend to exceed them.”

Windjammer Sports are also setting up specialist Powerman Duathlon Training Camps at Playitas to help those preparing for the event, and other upcoming Powerman duathlons.

“It’s going to be a tough race,” added Mark Davies. “We are jokingly suggesting that people might be better off staying in bed!”
